Ruckus—College Music Service Closes
According to TechCrunch.com, Ruckus, the music service that provided free music to college students, shut its’ doors to the public tonight. College students with a .edu address were able to register and download unlimited amounts of DRM-restricted music. However, it appears that this once-useful service has called it quits.

Music piracy has remained a hot topic in the United States, especially considering the RIAA has filed countless number of suits over the past decade. While the RIAA has stated that they will no longer take out suits against individuals, piracy is still taking place, and the RIAA is actively looking for other ways to combat it effectively.
According to TechCrunch, the Ruckus website closed for upgrades around 5PM EST today, and put up the informational box notifying users of it’s closure around 5:30PM.
There are alternatives to Ruckus out there. Free Napster allows users to stream music for free from their computer, although the tracks cannot be downloaded directly to an individual computer. iTunes and Amazon both feature safe, DRM-free music stores, allowing for any downloads to be placed on a MP3 player.
All in all, Ruckus provided a stellar service to college students around the country. It will undoubtedly be missed.
