Miley Cyrus Asian Photo: Racist Picture Causes Stir
Miley Cyrus is in trouble for something fairly unexpected—a photo where she makes a questionable, potentially racist gesture.

Credit: TMZ.com
TMZ obtained the photo, which showed Miley Cyrus standing around with friends. Miley is the one sitting in the middle, on the lap of her boyfriend, Justin Gaston. They were stretching their eyelids—widely recognized as a racist gesture towards Asians. Despite an Asian-American present in the picture, an organization still objects to the photo.
The OCA, an Asian-American activist group in the U.S., is demanding an apology from Cyrus.
It doesn’t take a genius to see that Cyrus could have possibly been intoxicated or under the influence. As seen in the photo above, a male is holding a glass of wine.
Much more than the controversial poses the group makes for the camera, what does this picture say about Cyrus in general? Is she surrounding herself with the right people? Look at past teenage stars, such as Hilary Duff and Lindsay Lohan. I’m personally not one to jump to conclusions, but it certainly doesn’t help her public image.
Lindsay Britney of Hollywood Celebs’ Gossips believes that the Hannah Montana star is OK, and thinks that it was a matter of finding a “ridiculous pose.” FILEUNDERI tends to agree.
What do you think? Is this a racist situation like the activist group claims, or is this mere overreaction?

I just wanted to say that I am so glad that the OCA has spoken out against Miley Cyrus’ offensive racist photos. I’m a young adult and used to be a fan of her work, as I found it wholesome entertainment, which is hard to come by these days. I was appalled and disgusted in light of the recent photos and am now boycotting her work. I applaud the OCA on calling media attention to what America’s sweetheart role model is really like: racist. People are dismissing these photos as trivial, saying they’re personal photos of a teenage her ‘just goofing around’ but fail to see that it’s a reflection on her character. Ultimately she is mocking the appearances of an ethnic group. That’s pretty downright disrespectful. And the people bitching out how Miley has done nothing wrong and should be left alone are just plain ignorant. She is in the media– it’s her job. Therefore there is open grounds for criticism. DEAL WITH IT. And people have the freedom of speech to express when they find something offensive.

Racism is as much perception as it is reality. There is no proof that there was any offense or racism intended. Even someone of the same race can be racist against their own race. Therefore if you perceive these pictures as racist then you must be a racist since you are the one perceiving them that way.
BTW, all the online polls I’ve encountered, including those from oriential countries show that most people do not consider these pictures to be intentionally racist and that they are just a bunch of young people having fun.
And to those you say she is in the media. Well even folks in the media have a right to personal time, without public scrunity inluding goofing off with her friends.

I’m Asian and don’t know anybody in my community who would be bothered by this. These are just teenagers joking around with an Asian friend. There’s nothing offensive about it.
What is offensive are liberal special interest groups like OCA who will make an issue out of anything to further their puritanical left-wing agendas. They really need to get a sense of humor.

I think that “UNCLE TONG” in the photo needs to go back to school to learn something about Asian bigotry. As for “HANOI MONTANA”, I hope the wrath of one billion plus people wreaks havoc on future earnings!!!

Funny how when racism is committed against Asians, it’s okay. They’re told to “get over it”, “stop being so sensitive, “there’s too much political correctness already”. The pushback is always against Asians. Meanwhile, America cowers before Jews and Blacks. Nothing insensitive can ever be said about Jews or Blacks. The golden childs of minorities.
Hey, I have an idea… let’s just end all political correctness altogether. Free speech for everyone. It’s no skin off Asians’ back, after all, they get called names all the time already with impunity.
So here we go:
Murderous white crackers, racist genocidal honkeys, stupid niggers, smelly apes, stingy kikes, cheating hooknose Jews, rice chinks, slanty-eyed gooks, illiterate wetbacks, fence jumping beaners, bomb-exploding towel heads, terrorist camel jockeys…
No more political correctness. Cool. The end to the double-standard, finally.

James,
I don’t know if you checked anytime recently, but this is America. America is a place where Freedom of Speech was so important, it was guaranteed by an Amendment to our Contitution. You and your “Victim” attitudes are one of the biggest problems with liberals today. You look so hard to find reasons to be offended, it’s no wonder you constantly are. I’ve listened to Chris Rock and half a dozen other black comedians call me “Whitey”. I have yet to get offended by it, and most times, I end up laughing my head off. In the cases where I don’t, I turn the channel, and watch something else.
Instead of trying to limit others right to free speech, why don’t you grow a reasonably thick skin and realize that everything that’s done isn’t racist. The fact that 1 in 1000 weak minded and overly sensitive people might be offended doesn’t make it so, either. .
If you want to find racist, look for KKK members walking down the street telling n**gers to go home. Then, after you’ve been comletely offended, bless God for allowing you to be born in a country where the expression of those asinine views is legal. If your goal is to shut up those who don’t agree with you, go move to China and shoot demonstrating students.
Sometimes the right answer is to tell the person that if they don’t like what’s being said, go find someplace else to be. It’s still almost a free country. Someday, however, due to PC-assholes, it might not be

Daniel, you’re an idiot. You completely miss the point.
What gall you have to tell me and other Asians who live their lives quietly and without complaint to pipe down and remember that America is the land of free speech?! You accuse Asians of having a victim attitude?? Are you f***** kidding?!
Before you get on your platform and preach to Asians about free speech and thick skins, tell that to blacks and Jews first, the quintessential victim-mongers and race-baitors!
How dare you hypocritical, two-faced morons like you tell Asians to grow a thick skin!
Frankly, I don’t give two-cents about Miley Cyrus or her slanty-eyed gesture. What p*sses me off time and again are hypocritical a**holes like YOU with double-standards who will kiss the a** of blacks and Jews and then turn around and slap the faces of Asians ’cause they lack the political power as of yet to kick you back in the face! I am not offended by her; I am offended by dopes like YOU who think Asians should take all manner of insult large or small and take it like a f*g!
But it is all too clear that in racist America that without political clout and playing the politics of race, no justice or fairness will be achieved if we leave that up to jerks like you!
If it were up to me, then I’d get rid of ALL POLITICAL CORRECTNESS! Free speech completely! Do you understand, idiot?! I hate the double-standard that is America! I believer EVERYONE should be treated equally, good and bad! But morons like you think some people are MORE equal than others. And that’s the crux of the f**** issue! Hypocricy!! Do you understand, moron?!! Have the balls to tell the Jews and Blacks to pipe down before admonishing Asians! And until you grow some, STFU!!

Wow, Milley Cyrus has defineately out done herself. Role model to many, million. This just shows how ignorant she is. Personally, as a teenager, sixteen, i can’t even relate to her humour, and say this is just a joke, simply “goofing off”. Despite, maybe not trying to offend anyone, her true colours are clearly shown through this picture. How she really feels about this ethnic group. Milley Cyrus, fortuneately, I look down on people like you, and instead of getting dragged into your, rascit ways, i was raised better. I can thankfully say i have class, and appriciation for others.

Racism towards Asians is considered acceptable in western society due to the many wars and economic rivalry between Whites and Asians. Everyone goes apeshit when Don Imus says “nappy haired ho“, but when John McCain said “I hate gooks“ it doesn`t make the mainstream media. Miley Cyrus is damn lucky that an Asian happened to be in the picture, this has lessened the backlash she would of gotten considerably. To me it doesn`t matter whether an Asian is present in the photo, I`ve met Asians like this before, they sacrifice their dignity and usually allow themselves to be the the butt of jokes in order to climb the white dominated social ladder. Although they are Asian in appearance, they tend to consider themselves white and all their friends are usually white. They have low self-esteem and often they make jokes about their Asian appearance in order to be accepted and play the role of court jester to the delight of their White “friends“.

Honestly, some of you people are totally and utterly ridiculous. SO maybe she was just joking aroudn with her asian friend but Miley Cyrus is a role model for hundreds of thousands of young people, which means thousands of young girls will think it’s ok to make a joke about other races now. Her asian friend probably did not feel comfortable with them making fun of his race but do you think it’s likely he would stand up to his white friends. Just because she is “only 17″ doesn’t make racism ok.
Also, you americans complaining about racism towards white people. You have got to be kidding me? “white trash” “whitey” you actually think that you have a right to be offended by that? After everything you have done to blacks and when white people have NEVER been suppressed in America? You are all pathetic and should be ashamed of yourselves. It is becoming even clearer to me now that, in general, americans are ignorant to the rest of the world and should get rid of their nationalistic complex.
Just so you know, I am NOT black.

My husband is half black and half asian and rather than standing on a soap box over a young girl being silly and acting like a moron he is laughing his a** off at how personal people are taking this and how some people…hey there james….are using this as an excuse to vent, james your bashing and name calling someone for their opinion about your comment and you that feel everyone should be treated equally than you say your not gonna take it like a f*g!!!! How offensive is that to the gay community sir? You may not like others comments but yours was just as offensive with your ignorant comment towards homosexuals get off yout soap box and welcome back to the real world?! Before you go all crazy on me know that I have a little boy who is black, asian and white and we live in Idaho potato farm country surrounded by bigots we deal with racism frequently but we are above letting comments and opinions of others get under our skin like most AMERICANS we are worried about the economy and keeping our home and our family fed. This is all stemming from a stupid picture from a disney tart being an idiot…..come on people!

While Miley probably WAS just having fun with her friends and probably isn’t racist, it was still an insensitive gesture. Being in her position makes her a role model for millions of young girls and it isn’t going to help her career if parents decide she isn’t a good influence for their children.

James,
I think it’s you who miss the point. I’d say the same thing to the others on your list. There are plenty of black victim-mongers - Jesse Jackson and Rev. Sharpton lead the charge. I’m sure there are others in the Jewish, as well as other minority groups.
There are also plenty of victim-mongors in the women’s community, as well as half a dozen other groups. I can still remember when the Illinois Illini had to give up their mascot because Indian groups were offended. Give me a break. The Tomohawk chop was eliminated because of “sensitivity” issues. If I was Indian, I’d much rather have people honoring the warrior spirit with a Tomohawk chop, then pandering to a bunch off wusses who complain it gives the “wrong impressions” of the Indians. At one time, Indians were warriors, and took pride in it.
The worst victim-mongors are the whites who are so busy running around trying to feel guilty for all the white race’s “past crimes”, that they can’t see straight. “I’m a bad person, ’cause I’m WHITE. Please forgive me for my whiteness, and I promise to be MORE SENSITIVE.” Then they spend an inordinate amount of time trying to make up for things that are past and done.
Most of us who have our heads screwed on correctly don’t even think about race most of the time. We talk to who we talk to, have a good time, and will drink a beer with just about anyone.
I don’t have a double standard. I’m not a victim, even if you rant and rave and call me names. You can call me a racist all you want. I could give a d**n. I’ve got friends of all kinds of races - and none of them whine about stupid stuff like Mylie Cyrus making slant eyes for photographs with friends - apparently, some of who are Asian.
The only conclusion I can come to is that you want to be offended. Asians in America have every reason to be proud of who they are. They are one of the few minority groups who, as a rule, excel at life while the others tend to lag behind. Most place a high priority on education, work and family. Asians look the way they look. It’s the way they are - it’s not good, it’s not bad, it just IS. A healthy person would look at this as a compliment - “Hey look, Miley wants to be like us!” You instead rant about how insulting it is. I doubt anyone in the photo was insulted.
There is still real racism out there, but this isn’t racism. Those who claim it is have watered down the term until it no longer means anything. “When everything is racism, nothing is racism”.
Peace out.
Daniel

For Ella,
In case you didn’t look around you, “whites” don’t have a monopoly on racism - it’s universal. If you don’t believe me, open your eyes.
In Africa, racial genocide is constant. There’s always one tribe trying to wipe out another. To you, they may be all “Black”, but to them, they are separate races.
Look at what happened between the Croats and the Serbs. It was a bit racial, a bit religious, and an awful mess.
Think the Asians are exempt? Look at what happened between China and Japan over the ages. Look at Cambodia. Go ask a “white” person what it’s like trying to reach the highest levels of management in a major Japanese company (I’ve known some).
Surely someone has not practiced racism. How about the American Indians? They were just “Victims”, weren’t they? Oh wait, they were at war long before “Whitey” came along. Tribes unleased tortures on each other that would turn the stomach of most modern Americans today. Maybe that’s ok, though, since they were “all” Indians, right? Except that in the past, Indians were members of their tribe, not some big group of people called “Indians”. I doubt that even today, a Cherokee would say he’s the same thing as a Sioux. Of course, when you’re running around feeling “oppressed”, it’s easier to lump yourself into a larger group, in tandem against the greater force (in this case, those “evil” whites).
Hispanics, or whatever you’d like to call the residents of Central and South America, were destroying each others civilizations before whites arrived as well. They had slaves, classes, and all the other evils of this world. The Aztecs thought they were the s**t, and sacrificed those of other “races” on an altar.
There are areas of America where white people shouldn’t go, at least, if they want to be safe. There are plenty of racist blacks, hispanics, put your favorite racial group here. Racism is everywhere.
Oh, and I’m not “black” either. I’m also not “white”. My ancestors are Bulgarian, Czechoslavakian, Jewish, and from God knows how many other Groups. My wife is at least part Irish and German. I don’t tell my kids to run around calling themselves Bulgar-Czecho-Jew-Germ-Irish Americans. They are also not “white”. They are just Americans.
Daniel
5 Feb 09 at 1:18 pm
Daniel,
Asians, as a rule, do not complain about racism. Asians, as a rule, do not play the race card. Asians, as a rule, do not gripe and whine about the “evil white man”. Asians, as a rule, just take the “cut” and “bruise” and move on with the rest of their lives.
Yet, every once in a blue moon, in order to maintain some level of dignity in civilized society, when they raise an issue about racism committed against them — because no one else will — no, they’re not patiently listened to. No, no attempts are made at trying to understand. No, rather, they’re told to be quiet. Get a thicker skin. Just get over it!
Including yourself.
You wrote a response kindly teaching me that America is a land where freedom of speech is important.
Did you think that I did not know that?
You wrote that liberals with their victimology such as myself are destroying America.
Do you know what my politics are? Do you know that I am a pretty radical libertarian? I bet I am more “anti-government”/”freedom loving” than even a corn-fed, white guy like you are.
You wrote that real racism can be found in the KKK whose members “tell n*ggers to go home”; that I should “bless God” that I have the privilege of living in a country that allows freedom of views; and that “pc-assholes” were making the nation less “free”.
How are these statement not patronizing and insulting?
Your position is that until Asians have it as bad as blacks, I should “bless God” for allowing me to live in your near Utopian nation where such freedom of speech is allowed!
In other words, Asians should take all manner of insult and take it like a good little, hard working oriental until at least the KKK goes hunting after them, or until presumably the Nazis attempt to exterminate them!
Why is it that making slanty eyed faces is okay? Why is calling Asians chinks and gooks in the media, okay? Why is racism, small or large, against Asians, okay?
In the larger picture, these are all miniscule issues, no doubt. No one denies that. People are dying, starving, and we’re in the grips of one of the largest credit contractions in the history of man. Dire times appear to be ahead. But should this mean that Asians should be regularly attacked by childish and racist gestures and words?
You, as a person who claims to have Asian friends, any compassionate human being, if they are told that “something” is NOT COOL by an aggrieved party … should they not respond in a sympathetic and compassionate way that reflects understanding?
I don’t care about Miley Cyrus. I am nearly 100% sure that they meant no racism by their actions. They were probably just goofing around. Nevertheless, if a vast majority of Asians feel that such gestures are inappropriate, even racist and hurtful inasmuch as it is loaded with racist history/connotations, shouldn’t non-Asians express *some* understanding rather than be dismissive or impatient?
Yeah, we know it’s not as bad as a lynching or gassing, but certainly, that shouldn’t mean Asians should continue to take all manner of insult in America and take it without at least whimpering disapproval.
As I said, it’s not Miley Cyrus and her cohorts that are disturbing more so than YOU and the rest of America like YOU who are hypocrites, practice a double-standard of morality, and regularly dismiss whatever grievance Asians express, even having the gall to recite portions of the Bill of Rights and the Constitution and to remind us how lucky we are to be living in the good ole USA!
It is extremely unfair and hypocritical that you should make it the object of your anti-victimology/anti-pc/anti-liberal rant those who are the least to play the race card and to raise complaints about racism. Such lectures, if you have the courage to do it, should be unloaded against blacks and Jews, but of course, white America does not, cannot, and instead cowers in fear before them lest they unleash the powers of their political machinery against them.
If white America is as much disgusted with political correctness, victimology and the politics of race as I am, then it is incumbent upon them to listen to those peoples who raise genuine grievances.
But white America is deaf and blind to toothless complaints. It is abundantly clear that unfortunately, in racist America, in hyper race-conscious America, in double-standard America, in order to be heard, it is not enough to appeal to simple justice, fairness and humanity. No! One must unleash the lawyers, the political machinery and every other sort of ugly arsenal so well used heretofore by blacks and Jews, the quintessential victims of America, indeed even all of humanity!
Peace out.
James

It’s always nice to hear from a white guy that racism is universal and existed even before the white man turned it into an art form. Maybe it eases the conscience a bit.
Daniel, don’t confuse racism with tribalism and ethnocentrism. Tribes, kingdoms and nations fight for natural resources. When they do so, they are not necessarily instances of ‘racism’. They are instances of competition and opposing group loyalties.
Non-western people, frankly, before their education by westerners, had no conception of ‘race’ or ‘racism’, ie, the notion that human beings should be divied up into “fixed categories” (white, black, and Mongoloid, for instance) and that people should discriminate based on such categories.
For non-westerners, simple loyalty to family, tribe or nation was all there was. They lived and died for their ‘group’, not their ‘race’. How quaint, isn’t it? Race is supranational. It goes beyond tribe and nation.
It was, frankly, westerners who introduced the questionable notion of “race”. No, I’m not saying that differences between peoples don’t exist. Of course, we are all different. You and I. Your family and mine. Groups of families vs other groups. However, the nature and manner in which we choose to draw the “lines” and “boundaries” around the varying genetic clusters that exist in humankind is ultimately subjective. While clusters exist, shades of grey also exist in the continuum of humankind. And clusters exist within clusters.
In the end, we can see as many similarities or differences within ourselves as we choose.
Often, when you hear a white guy complain about a racist experience, usually in a foreign country, it’s not racism per se that he has really experienced, although it may feel the same. It was ethnocentrism or jingoism. But to a westerner in which “race” and “racism” his culture is immersed, that’s all he sees.
To many, it may seem that I am being academic about this, but there is a salient difference between tribalism, ethnocentrism and racism. Racism by far is the most virulant.

Just because there is an Asian-American (supposedly) doesn’t necessarily mean that the gestures are “ok”. He may not believe himself to be an Asian. He may look like one, but he may not view himself to be one. Or, just for the sake of being able to hang-out with the Caucasian “cool” kids he may tolerate their behavior. We all know about the various racial stereotypes and many of us joke about them, but it doesn’t mean it is “ok”. It is this “innocent” behavior in youth that then leads to more serious and demonstrative as well as destructive/violent behavior in adults. If society tolerates and condones this negative behavior then society will reap the rewards for it later. The USA is a “melting pot” and founded upon the strength of different peoples from all corners of the world (to paraphrase Obama’s inaugural address). Bad behavior is unacceptable and should not be tolerated, rewarded, or encouraged. Kids will be kids, but it is up to the adults and society in general to shape their values and beliefs. What are society’s values if THIS is judged to be “acceptable”?

JJB,
Hello, mam.
I’m sure that as a white woman you know what it means to be a minority. Your husband is black/Japanese, and your son is black/Jap/white, and you are a woman. So, racism is a constant and daily affair for you.
But unlike the rest of the groveling, whining population of “little brats”, you have somehow learned to rise above it all, haven’t you? Because you know, “like most Americans” also do, that there are more important things in life than whining about “racial grievances”. You know, like earning a living, paying the electric bill, and preparing dinner. If only people would learn to get their priorities straight.
So maybe one day when your little son comes home hurt or upset because he was taunted in school, or maybe he saw something on television or a movie that didn’t express people like him in the most flattering way, and he says something not very nice about the bullies at school or society in general or just feels a little sorry for himself, you, being the cold, heartless mother that you are, will take an anticeptic to his feelings and clean those sentiments right out, because as you say, you will not allow your child to “spout such crap” and have it “infect my house”, just because “you happen to be white”. You don’t have to “listen to his racial grievances”. Of course not. You’re a white woman. You know what racism is all about, just “like most Americans” who don’t let it bother them.
Very good. Nip the whining in the bud. Nip it while he’s young.
After all, we’ve *all* experienced racism. You, as equally as will he, right? And as much as anyone else in America? You, the white woman, a minority. How bad you must have had it in this country. Especially in Idaho, potato country. I’m sure you really feel out of place there, don’t you? Sometimes you look at yourself in the mirror, maybe as your son might someday, and wonder, “why do I look like that??” Certainly.
You wonder to yourself: “Why am I fat… but the models on the magazine covers so thin! Why do I have saggy skin… while the actresses on television are flawless!” Oh, the injustice!
Yes, we’ve all experienced racism. You, your husband, your son, the black guy in Compton, the adopted little Asian girl in Arkansas who lives in an all white town who perhaps got taunted just today by a classmate with that “slanty eye” gesture thing. But it’s nothing to whine about, right? Why should she let it get under her skin? Just use that old anticeptic on her. Nip the whining in the bud.
Yeah, you know what it feels like to be a minority. You know the feeling well. But you don’t complain. And neither will you tolerate anyone who does.
So good luck to your little kid. I’m sure your self-righteous obnoxiousness personality will go a long way in helping him navigate through this complex world as a person of mixed ethnic heritage.
Good-bye, peace out and sayonara.

Blah blah blah James honey your gonna have to dig a little harder to make me cry! I feel sorry for you little boy and my son is stronger than you can ever hope to be when he does get picked on I advise him to feel sorry for those people and that he is better than to stoop to that level I teach my son to be strong and to never ever let others words or opinions make him feel bad about himself and you….you jackas** I was referring to him coming home and feeling sorry for himself or blaming another ethnic group for comments that may be made towards him maybe you weren’t breastfed as a child I don’t know, but the more you post the more you show you have a angry little dark soul I feel so sorry for you.

How would u like it if people began doing mean things about your heritage? Like blondes, they have dumb blonde jokes, once it hits the core, You’ll explode. Now, that wasn’t very nice, was it? Why would you call me a nasty name like that? After all, words never bother you, right? Lil’ old words… Why, they just wisp right between your thundering thighs, through your thinning hair, and right around your rotund gut.
Words… just harmless words.
So that’s what you tell your ethnic child “when he does get picked on”? You advise him to “feel sorry for those people”? I see, you don’t console him. There’s no, “It’s okay, son… Mom understands.. Mom knows how you feel… the bully is a jerk… he’s a retarded little brat… you’re beautiful and perfect and your mom loves you… he’ll be punished for being bad!” No, rather than empathy, you give him philosophy. You give him Gandhi. You tell him to turn the other cheek and take another punch! Yeah, let’s feel sorry for the little oppressor. Feel sorry for the bully. Good going. I bet that really works. I’m sure that really dries up those tears. Well, if not that, then you always have the anticeptic, right? Nip racial grievance in the bud! After all, you don’t have to stand for it just because you’re white! We’re *all* victims of racism. Even you, a white woman from Idaho. Potato country.
Words. How powerful they can be. With words, a black man inspired a nation and the people elected him president. With words contained in the Emancipation Proclamation, President Lincoln abolished slavery. With the words contained in the Constitition, we Americans are all guaranteed equality and justice. With words, God even created the heavens and the earth. And guess what? The Good Book tells us that the Word was the Son of God himself.
Words. How powerful they can be.
But you, you tell your son to ignore words. You tell him that words don’t matter. You tell him that words should never “make him feel bad”. Instead of sympathy, you give him rhetoric. Instead of words that heal, you offer him cold advice. No matter that he’s just a kid. I mean, how does a kid rise above words, anyways? Even adults have trouble rising above words. It may take a Gandhi or a Buddha to completely rise above words. But how many of us are a Gandhi or a Buddha? Are YOU a Buddha? Of course not. You might have a Buddha belly, but you’re no Buddha. You called me a jaka**! Buddha would never call me a jacka**. No, you’re just a cold, stony white woman from Idaho who in her free time bellows at “annoying” “whiny” Asians.
Words, as most people know, can be powerful things. They transmit ideas, beliefs, values. Words can cut as much as they can heal. Words can join people together or divide. Words can provide solace for a grieving child, maybe even your child “when he does get picked on”.
But you… You believe words should be ignored. You believe words are meaningless. You believe words should *never* make you feel bad. But as to how that is possible you have no real answer.
Get a thick skin? Don’t stoop? Rise above? Be strong? Don’t blame? Indeed, cold, heartless admonition for an aggrieved innocent child.
Good-bye, peace out and sayonara.
James

Hi Jen,
Unfortunately, there are still many, many people in America, despite all the progress made through the civil rights movement, who believe that some minorities deserve “less equality” than others.
Not knowing who you are, my guess would be that you are nowhere near 30 or even 20 years of age. And that’s the thing about stuff like this: a lot of very insensitive people try to brush incidents like this off and coldly retort that we should just “brush it off” and that we must “lighten up”. But it isn’t old people who are affected by things like this. As JJB heartlessly remind us, Americans have more important things to worry about. True, old people do have more important things to pull their thinning hairs out about. But then, old people don’t get teased or taunted by schoolkids with racist comments or jokes.
So when an adult Asian person sees this, it’s really not for himself he hurts, but for his children and other young Asian children in America who perhaps will feel that sadly they aren’t as yet still fully included in the fabric of America; that, unconsciously, there is something “wrong” with being an Asian person.
But of course, there’s nothing wrong with you. There is something wrong with them!!
And it’s people like JJB, who incredibly, or so she says, has a child of mixed heritage (can you believe she’s a mom and her son is part Japanese?!), and other clueless folks, that unfortunately contribute to this sort of insensitivity towards certain “less equal” minorities. JJB believes that Asians are just “whining” and “annoying” when they feel hurt by racism. Pretty incredible, isn’t it?! Especially when Asians hardly ever complain about anything no matter what bad things people do to them! Yeah, it’s insane. Some people are just cuckoo!
But in the end, Miley nor are any of these other people are important. They are just stupid and retarded. Maybe they drank too much hormone tainted cow milk when they were babies and went crazy. People who make fun of others will get their punishment, if not now, then eventually. If not in this life, then the next. They really should ask for God’s forgiveness and pray that they can learn to be nicer to others.

James,
It’s sad that you’re such an angry person.
Funny this would be from the book of James:
Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God.
I hope you find peace, and wisdom. Spewing hatred and encouraging discontent will never accomplish that which you seek.

Honey I think your a whiny brat not all asians little boy jimmy quit generalizing my statements they are towards you not all Asians so just stop you hate monger. You are totally pathetic and yes a big JACKA** you prove it over and over again with your blogs my son is happy im SO SORRY your such an angry person you and your family have my deepest sympathy and I Pray to God that you don’t have children so that you don’t have the chance to infect an innocent soul with so much hate and anger you really need therapy or how about this take all this negative energy and make a difference in your community but your too much of a coward to step up and put yourself out there instead your gonna hide behind blogs and attack others who disagree with you. I have dealt with far worse than you yes as a white woman, as a mother to a child of mixed race, as a wife to a man who is not white anglo saxon how dare you presume or doubt my life or my family I am practicing what I preach and although your comments are offensive I will say my peace and I will forgive and pray for you do not jimmy mistake kindness for weakness.
JJB
6 Feb 09 at 4:06 pm
JJB, take grammar and punctuation seriously much? LOL
You’re the one who sounds angry and bitter. Trying to explain away and justify the helplessness and frustration and anger you feel? “I’ve dealt with far worse . . . ”
I don’t really care, as I don’t know any of you and won’t come back to read your responses, but I feel sorry for your sweet little boy.
And, Daniel, you simply have your brain buried where the sun don’t shine.
And that’s all I have to say as I can’t stop laughing.

As an Asian American, this is really hurtful. I’m very disappointed not only with Miley, but all of her older friends who surely know better. The Asian guy didn’t pose, but he should have stopped them or told them. Unless it’d be too uncomfortable for him to…

Thank you so much James– you basically said all the things that I wanted to say.
I don’t even know who this girl is, but I DO know that she is a huge influential figure to millions of little girls and boys. (sorry, i do not watch Disney channel)
If you are that BIG of a public figure, you should know BETTER! But obviously, this girl FAILED miserably. For those who can not possibly comprehend this, and to why Asian-Americans are upset… wow…
Well, this makes me so sad but true, i guess you can’t possibly understand the feelings of being discriminated (race, color of skin, religion, or etc) unless you’ve actually walked on it. T_T

9 Feb 09 at 2:36 pm
It’s okay to make fun of someone, we all do!
But what people do not comprehend here is that she’s a public figure!!! this is like teaching kids it’s okay to use racial jokes~
Even elementary and middle school kids know not to “joke” regarding different races and religions. So PLease~ don’t give me the “kid” or “immature” excuses. Plus, 16 years of age is WELL ABOVE the age mentality to figure out what’s as simple as RIGHT VS WRONG!!!
And if she wants to make fun of asians, please do it “PRIVATE”, or at least not release the photo out to the public. man, this girl is dumb as hell and so are her dumb friends.

11 Feb 09 at 2:28 pm
I’m Asian and I’m not really offended by the photo since I sometimes go “there” with my non-Asian friends. That’s because I know that my non-Asian friends are wonderful, open minded human beings who have no racist bone in their body and we’ve been raised in this all melting pot of SoCal.
It probably helps that as a fairly attractive Asian woman, I’ve never encountered racism while growing up in LA. BUT, my brother has and I know it used to hurt him and that used to hurt me..
So, for those of you who are offended, I understand.
Why can’t everyone here fighting about this just acknowledge that some people are hurt by it? We’ve all been hurt by someone else’ insensitive or cruelty at one point or another and it never feels good to be be on the receiving side of it.
Belittling or even attacking the people who are simply saying that they’re hurt by this photo or by the insensitivity of some people here are just saying what they feel. Let’s just acknowledge that. Whatever we are, we’re all human..

That is racism, as far as I’m concerned, and Miley was an idiot for posing like that and expecting to not get criticized. And if I were Asian, I would be even more offended than I am now. They are understandably upset.
HOWEVER….Someone or some group is now suing Miley for something like 3 billion dollars. THREE BILLION over a photo that was undeniably stupid, but a part of free speach. And as much as I dislike racism, it IS an overreaction to sue someone because they did something that offended you. Get over it. People have to deal with hate every day. In the south, blacks are still considered dirty and evil by some people (one of the reasons I want to leave this lousy state). I am made fun of because I don’t have a bubbly personality that people expect from girls. But do I go suing people when they do this stuff to me/my friends? No!
Miley isn’t a saint, but I think some people are overreacting.
Kayla
12 Feb 09 at 9:42 pm

Quite honestly, I don’t even think James is asian. I’ve never met an asian so rude and ignorant before. They are usually very smart and more soft spoken. I have a lot of respect for my asian friends, but James is making an entire race look bad with his attitude and words.
Maybe we should begin suing all comedians who tell racist jokes or actors who say racist things in movies. I’m not saying I’m not offended, but where do we draw the line? I can ask for half the IP addresses on this post and sue you guys too. Sounds pretty ridiculous to me.
Bottom line is Miley made herself look stupid and the OCA is taking advantage of it because she has money. I understand the argument regarding her being a public figure, but again, if this was a picture from a movie, would you go and sue the studio, producer, director and so on? Probably not otherwise it would have been done already - many times before.
As for James, you’re too “angry” of a person. How many names have you spewed out in your posts? Belligerence gets you nowhere except people not listening to you. Your aggressiveness turns people off and your message isn’t well heard. Maybe you should take a public speaking course or some anger management courses and see if it will help.

I believe James speaks for many of us. Those of you who do not understand are too quick write him off as “angry”, “whiny”, or “pathetic”. He is speaking up and taking a stand for what he believes is right. Too bad you don’t like what he has to say. Accept the fact that some people simply are not going to accept racist gestures, subtle or not.

16 Feb 09 at 3:55 pm
Just the fact that so many people are riled up by this photo and that there are so many strong comments gives it a strong enough case that whatever this photo is, it is having an impact (good or bad). Obviously, people ARE taking offense to this photo which makes it OFFENSIVE.
The Asian male in the photo is irrelevant. We do not know him or his feelings towards this gesture and we cannot make up stories that because there is an Asian in the photo that it makes it okay or that he must want to be cool amongst his white friends, because for all we know he could have been totally against the idea and the people did it anyway.
Miley and her friends are not the first people to make this gesture in a highly public photo, look at Spain’s Olympic teams, but we can only hope that she is the last. At least that is what we are working towards. Go James! for making the angry Asian voice heard…it is okay to be angry. Who ever said it wasn’t?! There are many Asians out there angry over various racist gestures, comments, actions, words, etc. being done and said everyday and we should be allowed to be express our anger and have our say and be heard. There is a stereotype that Asians tend to be quiet, but we are all different and I’m glad for the ones that speak out and say what so many of us are thinking.
I think many Americans are not used to hearing an angry Asian voice and therefore tell us to “be quiet”, “it’s not really offensive”, “they are just teenagers”, etc. Well…if we do not speak out when we are offended, then what comes of that? Then no one will know how much people are offended by something like this and the same ignorance will continue and continue and possibly get worse. We cannot afford to be silent and let ignorance happen, that is not moving forward, that is not helping change for the better.
Also, the fact that they are teenagers/young people, could this be a reflection that a lack of sensitivity or lack of awareness is continuing and is being passed on to the next generation, in our homes, in our private lives?
Okay, so we don’t live in a perfect world, but we have to work at making things better. In some ways, I am glad for all the comments here. It is highlighting so all sides of this issue. Wow, isn’t it amazing how this ignorant gesture has inspired so many passionate comments. I guess that means this gesture has more impact than some would like to admit.

17 Feb 09 at 2:22 pm
Even if she had good intentions, it doesn’t justify her actions. Many asians experience racism on different levels. A photo like this will remind them of their pain. For some asians, they may not be offend depending on how they grew up (possibly the kid in the picture).
Overall, she should at least apologize. Never should anyone use their freedom to making a gesture or use anything (ex. noose, burning cross, swastika, etc…) that will remind someone else of their pain from racism.

Wow! This has been an education. I guess I have never really experienced true racism. I have been around all kinds of people and judge them by who they are and what they do. Racism does exist. Hatred exists because people feel so badly about themselves. I am sorry if anyone was offended by MS. The picture did not move me one way or the other because I have not idea what the context was. Natural consequences will take their course if she continues to behave badly. But let’s keep in mind that she is young. And yes this is all about $. I supposed a few billion would make my hurt feelings all better too.
Tweet, I agree with you. James, I sense your anger and I do feel badly for you. I have one word of advise…Jesus.
And Ella, I did not do anything to blacks. Slavery was wrong, but I didn’t do it and I can’t fix it. But slavery is not just a black thing, in the history of the world, slavery has come in all colors. I don’t have any white guilt. All people in this country are free to achieve or not achieve as they see fit. It is time to let go of the past. Not forget, but let go. Try not to let anger get the best of you, even though it is easy to be angry about all kinds of injustices. It is easy to blame the past for your failures in life, but until a person takes %100 responsibility for their life, they are doomed. We don’t live in a perfect world, and it will NEVER be perfect. Broken-ness is the human condition. Our challenge is to find the joy and Beauty despite the pain and ugliness, and to take our gifts and try to make the world a better place.
To all of you, if you are an American citizen, that is what you are. American. Not African American, not Hispanic American, not Asian American….but AMERICAN. And until we come to that place, this nonsense will go on. The self righteousness will keep us from coming together.
God Bless

race is not the issue here, the real problem is that people want to find a reason to find hate and get worked up and angry about a stupid pop star doing something that most kids have done before. people need to calm down. racism will always be an issue where ever you go, but why stir things up. just relax and mind your own.

As an asian, Miley’s photo has offended me, but many of the comments on this board has offended me a lot more… Clearly by all of this, there is still a lot of racism towards asians. While it may not be overt, it’s definitely there…
If you are not part of a minority, you wouldn’t really be able to understand, would you?
Why must race be such a big deal anyway? There is no scientific basis for separate races in the human species anyway. Everyone looks different. I am asian and I have natural HUGE eyes… bigger than a lot of caucasians. Stop stereotyping us, seriously! It’s getting old.
Racism is ridiculous

- Blondie: Save your sanctimonious platitudes and backhanded condolences, and direct your calls for a one America under the proud red, white and blue without hyphen towards the NAACP, the Anti-Defamation League, the National Action Network and other organizations that exist to protect and advance society’s sacred cows. It’s these ethnically partisan organizations that play up race and ethnic grievances with unparalleled acumen. The OCA? Who the heck are they? Blondie, go fry some big fish before hunting down anchovies!
- Biladork: Whether Miley Cyrus and her friends were MOTIVATED by racism is a matter of OPINION. Whether the act of pulling your eyes back in mock imitation of an Oriental person is RACIALLY OFFENSIVE to many Asians is a matter of FACT. What people GUESS is motivating someone’s behavior is a matter of CONJECTURE, but how someone FEELS about something they see/hear is a matter of FACT. Got it?!
- Sara: The girl asks, “isnt slanty eyes a characteristic of asians?” No, Sara, it isn’t a characteristic, it’s a CARICATURE. If you don’t understand the difference, go ask a grownup.
p.s. I didn’t attack Miley Cyrus. I attacked simpleminded people like you who think we should “get the hell out” of America if we have any complaints. Obviously, you think Asian-Americans aren’t “real” Americans; just guests in your country who should be deported if they begin to gripe too much.
- Some jokers are raising the $4billion suit against the Disney star and comingling that story with this debate. Stop. That’s a red herring. It’s irrelevant to this debate. I don’t know what the suit is about or what the basis for it is. I personally don’t agree with the suit. I think it’s a misguided effort to be heard, but that’s an argument for another day and not germane to this debate.
- Miley is Untalented: True, we can’t be mind-readers, but an act can be offensive in and of itself. Behind closed doors and among friends what is deemed socially unacceptable can be acceptable inasmuch as all parties are interacting in a spirit of good-will. But what was originally meant for private consumption, if leaked publicly, cannot be simply brushed aside. At minimum, as a public figure, an acknowledgemet of the negative racial connotations associated with the act should be offered.
- Thanks to those who agree with my postings — expressed sometimes with acrimony, sometimes with sarcasm, and sometimes with a little (attempted) humor. It’s good to know there are rational/reasonable people who understand that fairness and humanity should apply to everyone in equal measure.
Sadly, some people are just too dense/unwilling to understand and even have the audacity to flip the issue around into a “personal problem” that should be resolved quietly in the privacy of one’s own home. Seek Jesus’ guidance for our anger problems and blinkered views. Man, you just have to wonder why these smartasses can’t look in the mirror and realize what dopey hypocrites they are. Unfortunately, in the bizarro world we live in, Asian-Americans, despite being the least likely to commit crimes (but thanks Daniel for reminding us of VTech), the most likely to graduate from HS and college (notwithstanding REVERSE affirmative action and college admissions officers who SPURN Asian applicants in favor of other more “well-rounded” students so-called), and the least likely as a group to play the race-card, are the most maligned and negatively stereotyped in American media.
And why? I think a sample of the postings here provides some clues. As ‘Racism is Ridiculous’ said, many of the comments on this board are more troubling than the photo itself. These weasels think racial insults (intenional or not) directed at Asians aren’t offenses at all! — it all comes down to the provocateurs’ motivations. And since we aren’t mind-readers, we shouldn’t judge. Live and let live!
Jesus, save us from these hypocritical baboons!

James,
If a man makes slant eyes in the woods, and there’s no one to see it, is it still offensive? The decision that something’s offensive comes from the person who decides it’s offensive. Acts aren’t offensive; People choose to be offended by acts. My point is just this. Blacks call each other Niggers. I find the words offensive, but that’s MY choice, so I don’t use them.
But when they use them, towards each other, in the right circumstances, they can be words to express brotherhood.
The issue here is trying to take a serious look at what Miley (and I agree with you, she’s not talented, and just another annoying Disney-bot) meant by what she did.
Our current culture seems to be moving toward a society where people cry foul every time someone chooses to be offended by something. They want to say that those “offending” people should be shut up. They try and restrict our right to free speech. They want insincere apologies. They want to say that if anyone is offended, that the speech is offensive. That’s ridiculous, since the determination of offensiveness comes not from the “perpetrator”, but the “victim”. This is the crux of the problem, because some people are hyper-sensitive, and get offended at all kinds of ridiculous things, and somehow expect that the rest of the world should run around making allowances for them. Seems a bit narcissistic to me.
People should, especially in a supposedly civilized society, try and determine if the act was meant to offend, or if it was meant in jest, or just what the motivation was. It can be hilarious when a comedian says things that are stereotypical in an attempt to get people to laugh. It’s something completely different when your boss tells you that “blacks” can’t be relied upon, or that Asians are harder workers, or that the company culture requires someone more “normal” looking.
In this case, there is no reason to believe that Miley meant to offend anyone. She was horsing around with friends. The fact that her life is a photographic nightmare is a result of the pop-culture bots that inhabit this country. Regardless, she owes no one an apology for having fun with her friends. It’s ridiculous to demand that she apologize for something that was not meant to offend, and she shouldn’t do it, especially to the world who spends entirely too much of their lives worrying about what she’s doing.
My opinion would be different if she had told some Asian to “get out of my way, you fucking gook”, or if she was doing what she did in an attempt to put someone down. She wasn’t, as far as anyone knows, and if she had, it would’ve probably come out.
That being said, healthy people would give her the benefit of the doubt, write it off as immaturity, and get on with their lives. They certainly wouldn’t spend inordinate amounts of time trying to defame her for it..
Daniel
21 Feb 09 at 11:27 am
Its not a matter of “oh its just kids being kids and its only a joke” its a matter of stereotyping in such a manner that makes Americans have the view of racists. Now i realize that what i just mentioned itself was stereotyping, but i only mean to include those who have the same attitude as they people in this photo. It may not seem like such a big deal but as a matter of fact it is. Asians may be different, as well as other races than white, but by by pointing it out in this type of negative manner seems demeaning and unnecessary. I also do not believe that miley cyrus is too young to understand the difference between a joke and racism, just that maybe she has grown up in a society where it they didnt know any better. If this probably took place in CA, I dont doubt that it wouldve been done the same or even worse anywhere else in the US. Being such a role model for the youngins in America, she should just plain know better.

What she did is innaproppriate, but honestly, it’s nothing more than a group of teenagers making ridiculous poses in front of the camera. Happens all the time. Teenagers do stupid stuff. We were not there, and based on the inclusion of an Asian person in the photo, I think we can be safely assured they were not mocking Asians.
It’s amazing what counts as “scandalous” when Miley does it. So far I’ve been unable to see the scandal in any of it- though admittedly this is close. Give the girl a break, she’s a minor. She probably didn’t realize she was offending anyone.

“miley is untalented”
Well, at least we agree on something, but not what you had to say. You can believe what you want, but the purpose of the message was that offensive IS based on what people believe, not on what was done. At one time, slavery was considered the norm. The idea that blacks should be free was anethema. But that was the general consensus, and only in certain areas. In the plantation south, there were stiff penalties for teaching blacks to read. The IDEA of “All men are created Equal” has not changed, just the interpretation by the mass of the people. You claim that James, an angry nincompoop is the one in the know. He’s just an immature person who takes entirely too much personally. Then he gets himself completely bent out of shape to the point that he begins to utter racial slurs at ten time the rate of the average racist. This is the guy you want to support? This angry boy?
A wise person considers the situation and tries to see beyond the anger. They try to ensure that they aren’t over-reacting to the situation. They are not so weak internally that they cry foul at every statement. Jesse Jackson and Not-even-close-to-a-reverend Jackson are two such people.
If Martin Luther King Jr. were alive to see what they do, he’d tell them how they are the worst influence on the Black man since the Plantation overseers. They preach anger, and justification, and victimization, not over real racism, but only to give themselves power. Martin Luther would have eventually stopped fighting “whitey”, and would have then concentrated on helping blacks to overcome the things in their society which detroy it (like gangs, and the breakup of the family, the reduced influence of church, of irresponsiblility). JJ and his sick brother will never give up the fight, even though it is over, because without it they are empty. They don’t rail on there own for what they do, but insist it is only because of what is done to them, as if they were unintelligent animals, incapable of rising above adversity.
James is like that. He needs a reason to be angry, because he needs it as ar eason to exist. And what’s worse is you encourage him - an immature boy who spits hate.
I do not support her actions, just her right to them. This free society will not survive if those who try to force everyone to behave “appropriately” - a totally subjective term by the way - perservere.

2 Apr 09 at 5:30 pm
Well. I know it was a stupid thing that Miley Cyrus and her friends had done. and I’m sure none of them are supremely racist against Asians. however, i do think a lot of non asians are insensitive to asian jokes. a lot of asians do get teased for such things when they’re growing up as kids and its just stupid that these people are still doing it. especially since much of fan base is 10-12 yr olds. honestly, this happens to me all the time! lol. the white people at church always say “ok. lets do the asian pose! ” (squinting their eyes, slanting their eyes, and/or do a peace sign at the same time (i’m korean and go to a korean church with a good amount of white people who attend as well) . i don’t take it offensively but i DO expect it to happen from many non asians. and its kind of tiring. isn’t there any other jokes non asians can use around asians rather than these stupid jokes?
lisb
12 Apr 09 at 12:48 am
Try this,
Next time they say “ok. lets do the asian pose! “, respond with “No, I got a better idea - lets use the WHITE pose,” followed by pulling your eyes open as wide as possible (exaggeration is the key). Chances are you’ll get a laugh, and if you don’t, if they act offended, you’ve got the perfect opportunity to open dialogue about the whole thing.
Daniel
14 Apr 09 at 11:31 am
Daniel,
This picture is and was offensive. Why is it so hard for you to understand? I don’t think “use the WHITE pose” is the answer. How is this even close to being the same as what that buck toothed non-talented hillbilly did?
You say you don’t support her actions but her right to them. I don’t support everything James has to say but he his right to be angry too.
Now all these people use this forum to spew HATE. Asians and white alike. This is my problem with this situation.
I can feel the anger in you words man. The condesending way you talk about BLACKS. “unintelligent animals” wow! You balls are almost as big as that dude Mileys. You wrote how James is angry and immature. Take a look in the mirror dude.

miley is untalented,
I don’t have a problem with blacks. I have a problem with certain blacks - the “reverends” Jesse Jackson and Sharpton lead the list. They teach their people to be sheep.
Also, you are pulling what I said out of context. Here’s the blurb:
“JJ and his sick brother will never give up the fight, even though it is over, because without it they are empty. They don’t rail on there own for what they do, but insist it is only because of what is done to them, as if they were unintelligent animals, incapable of rising above adversity.”
What was said was that JJ and AS constantly speak about blacks AS IF they are unintelligent animals, incapable of rising, ON THEIR OWN (read it - without racist protections), above adversity. They encourage blacks to be victims, and tell them that they (blacks in general) cannot do it through their behavior, but require public assistance to move to a better place in life.
Blacks don’t need federally mandated assistance - they need to work together to promote healthy values and strong families, communities, churches. They need to learn to succeed through their merits, not their skin color. they need to abandon idiots like JJ and AS, and find real role models like Bill Cosby, who encourages them to do it on their own.

I’m Asian and I’m not happy with the gesture. However, as Avenue Q sings, “everyone’s a little bit racist.”
Well, some more so than others.
I do think that, like “beauty is in the eyes of the beholder,” racism, or anything that people might take offense at (curse words, inappropriate gestures, etc.) are really in the eyes of the beholders, too. So I understand if some people think it’s ridiculous that I am negatively affected by it, I am not affected negatively enough by it, or that I am even at all affected by it. Everyone has an opinion, and as long as we live on, there will be clashing opinions. I really just wanted to put my thoughts out there.
Oh, I also think that the OCA suing Miley Cyrus for an insane amount of money is ridiculous. I don’t really see how getting billions of dollars will do anything. Then again, that’s just me.

I am a 81 year old woman of Japanese ancestry who has lived through some interesting times. I have lived through WW II and the years of occupation by the Americans. I have some tidbits of information for you.
James,
Racism is alive and well in the Asian community. For hundreds of years we discriminated against Chinese, Koreans and even some of our own people called the Ainu who lived on Hokkaido because they had ethic features similiar to Europeans. These attitudes are still rampant in Japan. We talk agout the ‘gaijin’ and their mannerisms and attitudes in front of them because they do not know the language and find it fun ny. During the war years, propaganda was used to fuel racial hatred against all races other then Japanese. It was, and still is to a large degree, intrinsic to our society and belief system. Many millions of people were killed, ironicly mostly ‘Asians’.
This history of racial bigotry between ethnic Asians goes back thousands of years. Vietnamese against Chinese, Thai against Burmese, the list is endless when taken down to ethnic sub-groups.
You use the term ‘Asians’ as a subgroup lumping in all those with epicanthic folds around the eyes since you have taken offense with the ’slanted eyes’ as shown in the picture. Eskimoes, Mongolians, and many other ethinc races that have epicanthic folds that live on the steppes of Russia that are not classified as Asian. You can also include those with Trisomy 21 or Down Syndrome. Are these people to be offended too?
Your use of Jews and blacks in your arguments show your own bigotry. The hatred almost permeates from the screen. There is a long history of racial hatred that Asians have towards blacks and vice-a-versa. It is rooted in ethnic-economic bias. It seems that you feel slighted that blacks and Jews get more attention when confronted with racism. What is interesting is that there is a history of racial bias between those two groups along the line of reasoning that you are espousing, each feeling that the other is taking attention from their cries of racial discrimination.
We were taught as children that we were superior to other races, both culturally and economically. Even after the destruction of the Japanese Empire, this belief still persists, but is not espoused as openly as it once was.
Racism permeates everyone to some degree. Racism covers religion, nationality, political beleifs, skin color, economic status, physical stature, and just about every other category that you can create where one can rank other people based upon their specific beliefs. The problem is that we have decided to ignore what is basic human nature and bury it under political correctness. When you do that, you create a climate of resentment that builds under the surface until it explodes outward as rage and anger when given a ‘reason’ such as the picture in question. It only affects those whose perception of being persecuted has been repressed by a lack of dialogue under the guise of political correctness.
James, it seems that you and others who charecterise epicanthic folds and those who make their eyes refelect that specific trait as being racist. Does the same apply when Asian children pull their eyes into round circles when playing or joking around about Occidentals?
Does the exageration of physical attributes that is sterotypical of a race of religion constitute racism? Depends. What was the meaning and purpose behind the image? Does anyone truly think this young lady was ‘making fun” of Asians with malice and hatred? The most logical explanation is that it was done without malice aforethought. There is even an ‘Asian’ in the photograph who obiviously is considered a friend who wasn’t offeneded.
Yet we have here the typical response of those whose repressed anger over actual or perceptive insult involing perceieved racism. The ‘Asian’ is considered a ‘Uncle Tom’ as blacks would call someone who takes no offense to a percieved slight from the white community in particular. The true nature of the individual is one who has elevated himself to the point that such actions as the activity in the photograph, are taken in CONTEXT based on what is happening at the moment. It is obvious that racism as defined, does not apply.
We have approached the point where even a ‘political cartoon’ is decried as racism beacuse it has offended someones belief system, religious, ethinc or political. Just look at the riots in the middle east over political cartoons showing Mohammed with a bomb in his turban. Emabassies were ransacked, people were killed, others had to go into hiding because of racial and religious intolerance. Those reactions in themselves are racist at the core of their response.
Free Speech in iteself can lead to racism IF only one side is allowed to truly express its concerns and needs as well as fears. If one is not allowed to speak these fears or concerns beacuse to verbalize them is to be a racist, then racism and attacks on freedom of speech and expression will continue to escalate. This is currently what is happening not with blacks, Jews and other ethnic groups, but with those who fall under the category of ‘white’. If they cannot speak of their fears and concerns openly and without fear of confrontation and accusations of racism, the repressed anger and perceived bias, they too will experience what will be their Rodney King moment, when all the surpressed anger and hatred will cometo the surface and the resulting bloodbath will be on a scale that will make the Watts riots look like a tea party. If we who are minotiries in this country scream racism at every perceieved slight, and use that race card to gain advantage and to silent critics, we wil be just as guilty as those who hate and fear us.
Ignorance and censorship of free speech are the storm troopers for racism. Dialogue and addressing the true causes of racism which is ignorance and fear, openly and without fear of retribution, then and only then will we make progress in reducing racism.
Racism will never truly be eliminated as supression of speech and open dialogue will continue to rule those who benefit from the knee jerk reactions that has become the rule de jour. As long as we continue to reward those vocal few who are always playing the race card to keep their name in the limelight, we will stoke the fires of resentment and anger in the main stream populace.
